The "2-jjik" crowd demanding the removal of the Statue of Peace

Conservative overseas Koreans demanding the removal of the Statue of Peace
“It is not that Japan is demanding its removal, but rather that it is more upsetting to see Koreans themselves discussing the removal of the Statue of Peace.”
Kim Bae-i, an activist for the Melbourne Solidarity for the Statue of Peace (Mel-So-Yeon), shared this bitter sentiment regarding the scene at the regular general assembly of the Korean Association of Victoria, Australia, held on August 29. It is reported that some conservative Korean Association members attending the assembly continued to "object" to the Statue of Peace erected in front of the Melbourne Korean Community Center. Claims persisted that "the Korean Association members should be asked whether the statue should remain standing" and that "Mel-So-Yeon members have political bias." Ultimately, more than half of the approximately 40 attendees agreed to table the question of "whether to continue the installation of the Statue of Peace" as an agenda item for the next general assembly. The Statue of Peace, erected by Melbourne residents in 2019 to stand in solidarity with the victims of Japanese military "comfort women," is now facing potential removal after seven years due to backlash from some members of the community.
