While massive slaughter was taking place through trench warfare at the front lines,
they set up "Trench Experience Zones" in places like city parks in Paris. Citizens would go there on leisurely outings to experience what trench life was like, and then relax at nearby cafes or restaurants.
Considering the actual reality of trench warfare, the soldiers fighting in real trenches would have been absolutely furious.
Even the "trenches" built in these experience zones had nothing to do with reality; they were built according to idealized blueprints, equipped with all sorts of amenities for soldiers.
I heard that after experiencing this, it even caused a distortion in perception, where people would come out thinking, "I heard trench life was hard, but this is actually quite manageable..."
