If AI is dangerous, shouldn't we stop it?

There is a lot of noise right now regarding the dangers of AI.
Even Bernie Sanders has entered the fray.
He's arguing that if it's that dangerous, instead of just slowing down the pace, shouldn't we stop altogether?
But if we stop, China will overtake us, which would lead us into an even more dangerous situation.
