I don't think Brown needs to feel too hurt by Tatum

‌
I admit Tatum is Boston's number one star, but
if you ask whether Tatum holds that much decisive power
within the team, I have my doubts. To begin with, Tatum
isn't even the greatest protagonist who led Boston to a championship,
and while he has made First Teams several times, strictly speaking, it felt
a bit like he benefited from a "weak field" situation, and he is definitely not
an MVP-caliber player. He isn't the kind of player who makes
any team an instant contender just by having him.
Furthermore, with the Achilles injury making his recovery uncertain,
Tatum's influence must have been extremely limited.
Of course, he would have known about Brown's trade.
Since Brown was already put on the trade block for Porzingis,
it's more accurate to say that not just Tatum, but most Boston
officials knew about it. But what could Tatum have done in that situation?
Ask the team to keep Brown? If he did, the Boston front office
would inevitably respond with something like, "If we give Brown a max contract, it's hard to build a team plan,"
and then what would Tatum say to Brown? "Hey Brown, can you take less money and play with me?"
That makes no sense. It's also ridiculous for Tatum to tell Brown,
who earned Finals MVP while playing on a max contract, to give up his max...
It wasn't something Tatum could say in the first place.
Telling a professional athlete to play for less money isn't something a player
can say to a teammate, let alone a front office.
Moreover, asking someone to take a pay cut while he himself is on a max contract is even worse.
In short, I don't think Tatum could have done anything for Boston or for Brown.
Regardless of whether Tatum wanted to keep playing with Brown or not (judging by his current actions and words, it seems unlikely),
since Tatum could do nothing in that situation, it feels like a misunderstanding
that Brown feels uncomfortable with Tatum.
It feels like the situation got tangled and emotions got messy because Brown's status as the
team's #1 option—which solidified the team's system while Tatum was out—
coincided with the timing of Brown's re-signing and the emergence of the massive Porzingis trade asset.
I understand that Brown might be upset, but I don't think Tatum would have been the one to tell Boston, "Let's let Brown go!" and I certainly don't think Tatum would have wanted Porzingis over Brown during the trade negotiations.
