President Lee Jae-myung told the police, "You must dispassionately reflect on what has been lacking and embark on reforms to boldly correct wrong practices and systems."
In a commemorative speech delivered this morning (21st) at the 81st Police Day ceremony held at the National Police Agency, President Lee stated, "As our criminal justice system, which has been maintained for about 70 years, undergoes a complete reorganization, the authority of the police has become more significant than ever; you must keep in mind that your responsibility has also grown accordingly."
He continued, "I am well aware of the hard work you have put in to faithfully fulfill your duties," adding, "Nevertheless, you must be wary of the fact that the misconduct of a few and inadequate responses can undermine the trust and reputation of the entire organization."
In particular, he emphasized, "We must take seriously the reality that trust in the police is being shaken and public anxiety is growing due to recent relationship-based crimes and motive-less crimes targeting unspecified individuals," saying, "Public trust cannot be restored with words alone. You must undertake bone-deep efforts so that the public can feel the change."
President Lee also ordered, "You must cooperate closely with relevant agencies, such as the Prosecution Service and the Major Crimes Investigation Service, and take all necessary measures without gaps to ensure that no vacuum or public harm occurs due to the absence of supplementary investigation powers."
