Busan's 'Bukangi' identified as endangered oceanic whitetip shark... "3m long female" | Yonhap News
Yonhap News
(Busan=Yonhap News) Reporter Park Seong-je = The shark 'Bukangi', which has been staying in the artificial waterway of Busan North Port Waterfront Park for 19 days, has finally been confirmed as an oceanic whitetip shark.
It is difficult to distinguish between a sand tiger shark and an oceanic whitetip shark with the naked eye; they are differentiated by whether there is a ridge between the first and second dorsal fins—if there is a ridge, it is an oceanic whitetip shark, and if not, it is a sand tiger shark.
On the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, it is classified as an Endangered (EN) species due to declining populations.
In South Korea, the oceanic whitetip shark was previously recognized as the same species as the sand tiger shark, but it was reported to the academic community in 2019 as a species not previously recorded in the country.
