The Chinese Scholar Who Translated "The Wealth of Nations" in 1901
In 1901, Yan Fu (1853-1921) translated Adam Smith's
[An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations] into Chinese.
Yan Fu did not agree with many of his views, such as the labor theory of value.
He believed that the value of a commodity is determined solely by the relationship between supply and demand,
and he added annotations to the translation to make it clear that he opposed Smith's views.
"Value is simple.
Compare two items of similar face value and assign them a number.
If value were merely a matter of the labor inherent within,
those items would exist as they are, and their value would not change over time."
-Excerpt from page 156 of "The World History of Money"-
It is also said that Yan Fu (嚴復, Yan Fu) translated John Stuart Mill's [On Liberty] and
Thomas Huxley's [Evolution and Ethics].
