Apart from the Revolutionary Guard, there is a separate 'Iranian Military' organization.
The emblem on the left is for the 'Islamic Republic of Iran Armed Forces,'
and the emblem on the right is for the 'Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.'
The two are separate organizations with different chains of command.
- Iranian Military: National regular army, responsible for national defense and protecting citizens' safety
- Revolutionary Guard: Protects the Islamic system, the Supreme Leader, and the clergy, and prevents internal rebellion.
The reason Khomeini went out of his way to create the 'Revolutionary Guard' separately
was because he could not trust the Iranian Military 100%.
The Iranian Military was essentially a reorganization of the former Imperial Iranian military.
After the revolution, as the Imperial military transitioned into the Republican military,
officers swore to abandon their loyalty to the Emperor and pledge allegiance to the Republic.
However, the military officers, who were the core of the conservatives and the Emperor's Praetorian Guard,
were untrustworthy entities and potential rebel forces.
Ultimately, the Revolutionary Guard is the new military organization established
to keep them in check and to form a personal guard for the clergy.
While the two had entirely separate chains of command,
following the Iran-Iraq War in 1989, they have been under the central command of the
'Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters,' which leads joint operations.
