"China's CXMT shock is scary"... US semiconductor stocks plunge following Samsung and Hynixn.news.naver.comUS memory semiconductor stocks plummeted due to concerns over technological pursuit from China. As China's largest DRAM manufacturer, ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), announced progress in developing next-generation memory technology, the possibility of intensifying competition in the global semiconductor market has been highlighted.
One of the factors weighing down semiconductor stocks is the news of technological development from China's CXMT. According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), CXMT President Cao Kanrui announced at a recent industry event in Shanghai that they have made significant progress in developing '4F² (4F square)' technology, a next-generation DRAM structure. They also announced plans to introduce server-grade DDR5 memory products applying this technology by the end of this year.
4F² is a technology that reduces the area of memory cells that store data in semiconductors. It can reduce the cell area by approximately 33% compared to the 6F² structure currently used in most commercial DRAM, making it advantageous for storing more data in the same space. CXMT explained that they improved current leakage issues and increased storage density through their independently developed vertical transistor structure.
Notably, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are also developing the same technology. SK Hynix revealed its 4F² technology development roadmap last year. Samsung Electronics is also known to be pushing for mass production of next-generation DRAM applying this structure with a target of 2028. If CXMT releases products within this year as planned, technological competition with Korean companies could become even more intense.
..
There are also rumors circulating that Chinese semiconductors will start flooding the market with DRAM like crazy starting from the end of this year.
