This is the VFW 614, manufactured by the German company VFW-Fokker from 1971 to 1977. It is said that it was designed this way to prevent damage caused by foreign objects being sucked into the engines (FOD, Foreign Object Debris / Foreign Object Damage) during takeoff and landing in harsh environments, such as unpaved runways.
It is equipped with the M45H engine, jointly manufactured by Rolls-Royce of the UK and Snecma of France. However, due to a combination of factors—including the engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce PLC temporarily going bankrupt during the aircraft's development period, and the fact that the operating agencies purchasing the aircraft were limited to a few European commercial airlines and the West German Air Force at the time—it was eventually discontinued in 1977.
