Gwangju Biennale accepts 'Taiwan Pavilion'... "Approves name change"
(Jeonnam Gwangju = Yonhap News) Reporter Jang Ah-reum = The controversy over the name change of the 'Taiwan Pavilion' ahead of the 16th Gwangju Biennale has concluded with the acceptance of the Taiwanese side's request.
The Gwangju Biennale Foundation announced on the 25th that after reviewing the name change approval application received from the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (NTMoFA), it has approved the pavilion (special pavilion) name as 'Taiwan Pavilion' instead of 'NTMoFA'.
Since 2018, the Gwangju Biennale has operated the Pavilion Project, where domestic and international art and cultural institutions participate and exchange separately from the main exhibition.
In this year's exhibition, 16 national pavilions and 11 institutions are participating in the project, and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts is one of them.
However, the Taiwan Ministry of Culture raised an issue, stating that they had been discussing the exhibition with the Gwangju Biennale under the name 'Taiwan Pavilion', but the organizers suddenly changed it to 'NTMoFA' last June.
The Gwangju Biennale countered, saying, "We operate by distinguishing pavilion participants into national pavilions and institutional pavilions, and NTMoFA signed the exhibition contract in its capacity as an institution," claiming it was a contractual matter unrelated to external intervention or censorship.
Subsequently, criticism followed from not only the participating Taiwanese artists but also from the domestic and international art community, including the Gwangju Artists Association, and voices demanding the restoration of the 'Taiwan Pavilion' name grew louder.
The delivery and installation of works at the exhibition venue, which was scheduled to begin on the 18th, were also delayed.
This was because the National Asia Culture Center, the intended site for the installation, took the position that they could not lend the space until the Gwangju Biennale and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts reached an agreement on the pavilion name.
To ensure the smooth progress of the exhibition, the Gwangju Biennale entered into renegotiations and decided to operate the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts pavilion in the form of a national pavilion.
A Gwangju Biennale official stated, "We will also consult with the Asia Culture Center to ensure there are no setbacks in the installation and exhibition of pavilion works."
The 16th Gwangju Biennale will be held from September 5 to November 15 in various parts of Gwangju, including the Biennale exhibition halls, under the theme 'You must change your life'.
