Will Syngman Rhee receive a fair evaluation someday?
There was a perception of him as a dictator ousted by the April 19 Revolution and a mass murderer who killed countless citizens in the name of anti-communism.
As I get older, I realize there are certainly faults, but
looking at how he established the foundation of our socio-economic structure through the establishment of a liberal democratic system and land reform,
and how he pushed through the Mutual Defense Treaty between the Republic of Korea and the United States to set the grand security blueprint for the next 70 years, I've come to think he was a leader who sufficiently fulfilled the role of a founding father.
Of course, he had his mistakes, but his achievements were too great to simply disparage him. Park Chung-hee's economic growth and the subsequent transition to democracy were only possible because Syngman Rhee had laid the groundwork.
