[Breaking News] “Only non-regular workers increased”… 100,000 out of 110,000 new workers are non-regular, reaching an all-time high
Results by employment type from the National Data Agency's economically active population survey
8.67 million non-regular workers, accounting for 38.5%
Both scale and proportion hit record highs
As the number of non-regular workers, centered around those aged 60 and older, increased, both the scale and proportion reached their highest levels ever. The monthly wage gap between regular and non-regular workers also widened to 1.94 million KRW, the largest gap since statistics began being compiled.
These findings were revealed in the ‘Results of the August 2026 Supplementary Survey on Employment Type of the Economically Active Population’ released by the National Data Agency on the 21st.
As of last August, the number of non-regular workers stood at 8,671,000, an increase of 103,000 compared to the same period last year. This is the largest scale since the relevant statistics were first compiled in 2003.
While the number of regular workers also increased by 10,000 to 13,855,000, it means that 103,000 of the 113,000 total increase in wage earners were non-regular workers.
Non-regular workers accounted for 38.5% of the 22,526,000 total wage earners, up 0.3 percentage points (p) from a year ago. This also set a new record, surpassing the previous high of 38.4% in August 2021.
