After the Qing Dynasty conquered the mainland in 1644, they forced the Han people to adopt the queue hairstyle (pigtail).
They treated them so harshly that anyone who did not comply was killed without exception.
Since this was a symbol of submission to the ruling ethnic group, it is understandable why later generations of Han Chinese would despise it.
