Living in a small US town, news about undocumented immigrant crackdowns feels like it's happening in another country
There is a school my child attends
where 70% of the students are Hispanic.
It's not in the South like the West, Texas, or Arizona, but in a small town in North Carolina where the white population ratio is high.
Because the cost of living in Tennessee and North Carolina is low,
they say undocumented immigrants started flocking to this area a few years ago.
Everywhere you go, it's crowded.
However, I haven't even seen ICE once.
They seem to be prevalent in airports or big cities,
but crackdowns on undocumented immigrants are nowhere to be found.
It feels like the US has already reached a point where they can't stop it.
What's strange is that even if they enter illegally, the "seniors" who have already settled down help them find jobs and share Social Security numbers so they can get driver's licenses, open bank accounts, and do everything they need to do.
People here say that while the proportion of elderly people in rural America is currently high, they expect Hispanics to become the mainstream in 10 to 20 years.
