It has been found that more than 8 out of 10 athletes who received military service exemptions in the last 5 years were Asian Games gold medalists under the exemption system introduced 52 years ago in 1973. According to an analysis of data from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism by Rep. Cho Eun-hee of the People Power Party today (6th), it was also confirmed that nearly half of the athletes who received benefits violated service regulations.
An analysis of Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism data by Rep. Cho Eun-hee of the People Power Party revealed that 8 out of 10 athletes who received military service exemptions over the last 5 years were gold medalists at the Asian Games.
Out of 80 athletes incorporated as military service exempt athletes from 2022 to last August, 65 (81.3%) were Asian Games gold medalists. 15 athletes received exemptions through Olympic medals.
Athletes who received benefits for enhancing national prestige were found to have failed to properly follow service regulations.
Since 2022, 36 athletes—nearly half at 45%—received warnings for violating service regulations. Among those warned for 'unauthorized concurrent employment,' such as signing advertising contracts without permission, there were 21 individuals, 17 of whom were Asian Games gold medalists. While active-duty soldiers face disciplinary actions such as demotion or pay cuts for engaging in profit-making concurrent employment, athletes only face a service period extension of 5 days.
More than 45% of athletes were warned for filming advertisements or holding unauthorized concurrent jobs without permission during service lololol
How can they claim to enhance national prestige with that kind of mindset? They are just bringing shame to the country.
