Trade documents are the paper or electronic records that prove what was sold, shipped, insured and paid for. In cross-border trade the goods and the parties are far apart, so banks, customs and carriers act on the documents rather than on the goods themselves. A defect in the paperwork can delay payment even when the shipment is perfect.
