What are some things that help a country when hosting international sporting events?

Personally,
I feel the World Cup is quite helpful,
and for the Summer Olympics, if done frugally, it's a break-even or a slight loss, but if done grandly, it seems to result in a huge loss.
As for the Winter Olympics or the Winter/Summer Asian Games, I think it's much better not to host them at all...
