South Korea is ranked number one in the world in archery, yet there isn't a single person around us who practices archery as a hobby.
In the 70s and 80s, sports played a major role in enhancing national prestige, but that is no longer the case.
When Mohamed Salah, who is as good at football as Son Heung-min, is Egyptian, does anyone suddenly want to go to Egypt or feel the need to learn about Egypt? When Haaland dominates the World Cup, does it make anyone learn anything about Norway?
Rather, cultural arts like BTS are what enhance national prestige these days.
It is better to build a foundation for grassroots sports so that talented children can naturally pursue a path as professional athletes, and even if they don't become pros, we create an environment where they can enjoy sports within that same community. We should redirect the funds currently supporting elite sports into grassroots sports.
As for military service exemptions, let's limit them to the Olympics only.
