Malicious fake news regarding author Rhyu Si-min and medical privatization (Repost)
Fact-check regarding the attempts to "dig up the grave" of Rhyu Si-min!
1. Claims that "Rhyu Si-min is the person who pushed for medical privatization during his time as Minister of Health and Welfare" are circulating everywhere.
Even before Minister Rhyu's inauguration, the Roh Moo-hyun administration in 2005 launched the Medical Industry Advancement Committee to promote policies aimed at fostering medical services as a growth industry.
However, "while Author Rhyu participated in the participatory government's medical industrialization policies, he was not the driver who led the privatization of health insurance or the full-scale introduction of for-profit hospitals.
On the contrary, during his tenure as Minister, he also promoted policies to expand health insurance coverage and limit the role of private insurance.
2. This is a serious recent resurgence of demonizing and "digging up" Author Rhyu.
The claim that "during the democratization movement in 1980, Author Rhyu was a traitor who snitched on 77 comrades."
This started with the unilateral claim of Shim Jae-chul, a pro-Park Geun-hye politician currently outside the People Power Party.
However, on May 1, 2019, the YouTube channel 'Alrileo' sufficiently explained this in a video titled
《Title: I will tell you the 1980 'Seoul Spring' statement》.
Although he dislikes taking legal action,
the incident quieted down after he issued a warning saying, 《I will review measures if fake news continues to be produced》.
However, patients of "Nan-ga-byeong" (a term for those triggered by his views) who are enraged by Author Rhyu's theories A, B, and C have begun digging him up again by bringing up fake news since around March 2026,
and recently, a total offensive to "kill Rhyu Si-min" has begun,
with widespread labeling of him as a "traitor who snitched on 77 colleagues."
Currently, online communities and SNS are almost entirely covered by "news-peddlers." The explanation provided by Author Rhyu's direct rebuttal is roughly as follows:
Regarding the statement at the time, Rhyu Si-min stated: Student movement leaders at the time had pre-established principles on "what to disclose and what to hide" in anticipation of being arrested.
The core argument was that they aimed to hide the connections between underground/secret organizations and the political sphere (such as Kim Dae-jung) and instead explain the events as the activities of the publicly active student council organizations.
Furthermore, he refuted the claims by pointing out that many figures appearing in the statements, such as Lee Hae-chan and Shin Kye-ryun,
were already exposed to the authorities or were people engaged in public student council activities.
Thus, even while facing interrogation, he said, "We hid everything that needed to be hidden and denied everything that needed to be denied,"
and cited the fact that not a single member of the Seoul National University Rural Law Society—the secret organization he belonged to—was included in the subsequent list of approximately 500 wanted persons.
