How do you deal with a boss you don't get along with?

He is a department head level manager, but he is quite fickle and moody.
He often snaps out of nowhere or gets annoyed over ridiculous things.
In these situations, should I:
1. Just go along with him since he's the boss
→ I treat him well when he's in a good mood. However, this makes things clingy and exhausting.
2. Draw a line and treat him strictly as a business relationship
→ He is the type who is tough on the strong and soft on the weak, so he actually bothers me less. Instead, he gives me subtle side-eyes/snide remarks.
