Today is "Senior Citizens Day"

I saw it written on the calendar, so I asked the youngest member of my team,
"Since it's Senior Citizens Day today, can I head home early?" and they just gave me a polite smile, haha.
I can understand the meaning of "Senior Citizens Day," but there are so many strange specific days out there.
Oct 14, Standardization Day: I looked it up and it's a day to promote "global standardization," hmm...
Oct 28, Correctional Day: To boost the morale of those working in corrections (I'll let that slide) and to promote the rehabilitation will of inmates. Huh?
