Latest update on the perpetrator of sexual exploitation material production and distribution

An active-duty police officer has been arrested on charges of creating and distributing sexual exploitation material using artificial intelligence. While hiding his identity in a Telegram chatroom, he was caught by investigators conducting an undercover operation. Reporter Yoo Su-hwan reports.

Sergeant A, a member of the Seoul Dongdaemun Police Station, was arrested last month on charges of creating sexual exploitation material using AI and distributing it in Telegram chatrooms.
Investigations revealed that from 2022 to last July, over a period of four years, Sergeant A produced approximately 400 fake videos using photos posted on social media.
He is accused of distributing about 50 of those videos through messenger services such as Telegram.
Sergeant A was caught by police who were conducting undercover investigations in messenger chatrooms like Telegram.
Since last December, the Cyber Crime Investigation Unit of the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency has been conducting undercover operations by infiltrating Telegram.
Following cases such as the so-called 'Nth Room' and 'Baksa Room,' laws were amended so that police can conduct undercover investigations into digital sex crimes upon receiving court approval.
After detecting Sergeant A's crimes, the police conducted a search and seizure in August, securing his mobile phone, computer, and other devices.
It is reported that thousands of illegal recordings, including fake videos and child/adolescent sexual exploitation material, were discovered on Sergeant A's mobile phone at that time.
After being notified of the start of the investigation by the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency, the Seoul Dongdaemun Police Station placed Sergeant A on standby, and he was removed from his position immediately after being arrested last month.
Investigations show that Sergeant A has been working as a police officer since December 2023, meaning he continued his crimes for nearly three years even while wearing a police uniform.
The police stated that they intend to proceed with disciplinary procedures against Sergeant A while monitoring the trial.
