The argument that we must maintain agriculture because the country will go bankrupt if we give up farming

I heard people saying that's complete nonsense..
They say we can only be self-sufficient in rice, but nothing else.
They say if we only eat rice, everyone will die from beriberi.
They also say that since many countries have agriculture, it's impossible to create a monopoly anyway.
Though they might be wrong.
