[Editorial] Is there no one else for Minister of Justice besides the 'Prosecution Withdrawal Group'

It is reported that President Lee Jae-myung is strongly considering Rep. Park Kyun-taek and Rep. Yang Bu-nam of the Democratic Party of Korea as candidates for Minister of Justice. Considering that the position of Minister of Justice has been vacant for two months since former Minister Jung Sung-ho's departure on August 28, the situation can no longer be delayed.
Even so, questions are being raised as to why the candidates must be members of the 'Prosecution Withdrawal Members Group' within the ruling party. It is like adjusting one's hat under a plum tree. President Lee cannot help but face suspicion that this is a buildup to eliminate his own criminal trials.
Both lawmakers share the commonality of being first-term lawmakers from the Honam region who are pro-Lee Jae-myung and are former High Prosecutors. Rep. Park served as the party leader's legal special advisor in 2022, acting as a defense counsel for President Lee's side in the Baekhyeon-dong, Seongnam FC, and North Korea remittance cases. During the discussions on the 'Special Counsel for Prosecution Manipulation by the Yoon Suk-yeol Government' bill—often called the 'Prosecution Withdrawal Special Counsel'—he was a figure who advocated for the special counsel's power to withdraw indictments.
While Rep. Yang did not personally act as a lawyer for President Lee's cases, he was appointed as the party's legal committee chairman in 2022 and oversaw the party's response to President Lee's 'judicial risks' for about a year and a half. In the 2024 Democratic Party Gwangju City Chapter chairman election, he even styled himself as 'Lee Jae-myung's bodyguard.'
Looking at the backgrounds of these two individuals, whoever becomes Minister of Justice will inevitably face potential conflicts of interest and controversies regarding fairness.
People Power Party Senior Whip Spokesperson Choi Eun-seok stated in a commentary on the 25th, "I cannot help but ask whether they are looking for a suitable person to be responsible for the legal administration of the Republic of Korea, or a person to complete the President's mission of 'erasing his own crimes,'" and People Power Party Rep. Joo Jin-woo pointed out, "The fact that a former defense counsel for President Lee is wearing a lawmaker's badge and becoming a candidate for Minister of Justice is itself a serious conflict of interest."
