Pros and cons of working at an SME
Role: Sales Management
70% office-based
Pros
1. Salary
Surprisingly, I am satisfied with the salary. I am in my 5th year at this company, and my contract salary is 55 million KRW.
On top of that, there are bonuses, incentives, and separate minor welfare benefits.
2. Vehicle Support
They provide a Tucson-class vehicle for business use,
and cover all fuel and Hi-pass (toll) costs.
3. Meal Allowance
It is 12,000 KRW, and they don't complain even if I occasionally eat something more expensive.
4. Authority by Rank
I am currently a Team Leader.
When I say, "Let's have a team dinner," or "We need this and that, please buy it," or "Please improve these areas..."
They try their best to reflect these requests.
5. Flexibility
"I'll be leaving work a bit early today."
"I'm going to the hospital."
"An acquaintance is visiting today, so I'll be eating out for lunch and will be a bit late."
"I've worked a lot of overtime lately, so I'll work from home tomorrow morning."
They accept all of these.
6. Field Work
The occasional field work provides some breathing room.
7. Salary Increases
They handle them quite well.
Usually, there is a 7–10% increase every year.
Cons
1. Lots of overtime when busy.
2. Working on public holidays when busy.
3. Having to handle various different tasks.
4. Since the main clients are large corporations, I sometimes become an emotional punching bag.
5. There are many female employees in the office... it's annoying.
6. The cafeteria food tastes bad.
7. Commuting is difficult without a car.
There is overtime and holiday work when it's busy,
but getting an extra 1 to 2 million KRW in my paycheck makes it all worth it.
Also, the overtime and holiday work are manageable.
I didn't make it into a large corporation, but I am satisfied with my current job.
