Samsung and Hynix bonuses next year will be around 22 trillion KRW, wow

(Kukmin Ilbo) According to the BOK Issue Note "What will happen to consumption in semiconductor beneficiary regions: Spillover effects viewed through regional microdata" released by the Bank of Korea on the 31st,
the 2027 immediate cashable after-tax bonuses for Samsung Electronics' DS division and SK Hynix are estimated at 21.9 trillion KRW.
This is approximately five times this year's 4.4 trillion KRW and about 1.6 times the 13.5 trillion KRW in consumption coupons distributed by the government last year.
The Bank of Korea predicted that if these massive increases in bonuses lead to actual consumption, the domestic spillover effect of the semiconductor boom will grow even further next year.
In an upside scenario where the consumption spillover rate remains at this year's level next year, it is estimated that the semiconductor boom will raise the 2027 Gross Domestic Product (GDP) level by 0.12% compared to a scenario without the boom.
Even in a conservative scenario assuming a lower consumption spillover rate as the bonus size increases, the GDP enhancement effect was calculated at 0.08%. Converted to a growth rate, this is an effect of raising next year's growth rate by 0.06 to 0.09 percentage points.
However, it is still difficult to say that the warmth of the semiconductor boom has spread evenly across the entire economy.
Increased consumption so far has been concentrated in high-priced discretionary goods such as automobiles, department stores, and home appliances/furniture. Online consumption has also shown a notable upward trend this year,
and the Bank of Korea viewed this as being largely related to automobile purchases, considering the rapid increase in Tesla vehicle deliveries in major semiconductor beneficiary regions. On the other hand, no significant changes were observed in daily consumption such as supermarkets and convenience stores, or in medical and educational expenditures.
