A man in his 30s, who posted threats on social media against Lee Jae-myung, then a Democratic Party presidential primary candidate, ahead of last year's 21st presidential election, has been sentenced to a suspended prison term.
Judge Kim Ki-ho of the Incheon District Court's 9th Criminal Division sentenced "A," a man in his 30s indicted on intimidation charges, to 4 months in prison suspended for 1 year during the sentencing hearing today (27th).
Judge Kim stated the reasoning for the sentencing, saying, "Looking at the content of the defendant's threats, the culpability is quite high and he has not been forgiven by the victim," but added, "I considered that the defendant admitted to the crime and is deeply reflecting on it, and that he is a first-time offender with no prior criminal record."
Previously, during the closing argument on the 11th, the prosecution sought a 6-month prison sentence for A.
A, who is a person with a Grade 1 visual impairment, is accused of posting a message on Facebook around 11 PM on April 20 last year, while the Democratic Party's presidential primary was underway, stating, "Recruiting an assassination squad for Lee Jae-myung," from his home in Bupyeong-gu, Incheon.
The post he wrote also included the content, "Guns, bows, and crossbows are ready."
Investigations revealed that A used a program that helps people write text as if they were able-bodied.
He stated during the police investigation that he "posted the message as a joke," and it was determined that he did not actually prepare any tools to commit the crime.
