Today I am convinced that Maggie Cheung contributed more to In the Mood for Love than Tony Leung
I am watching In the Mood for Love on EBS right now.
Even if Tony Leung is a god of acting, I am convinced today that without Maggie Cheung, this movie wouldn't have become a legend.
To be honest, Maggie Cheung's appearance in the cheongsam accounts for 50% of the lingering impression the film leaves behind.
She isn't even that tall. I saw Tony Leung in person and he is in the 160cm range. Since Maggie Cheung is that height while wearing high heels, she must be in her late 150s.
But those proportions...
That cheongsam silhouette would be impossible unless she were "bone-thin," but looking at the flesh on her arms, she isn't strictly "bone-thin."
Unlike the "bone-thin" look of modern idols, her body lines are just slender and her arms and legs are incredibly long.
There was a parody of In the Mood for Love by Kim Sung-ryung in a variety show; even though Kim Sung-ryung is a great beauty and very tall, she couldn't quite replicate Maggie Cheung's cheongsam silhouette.
I read an anecdote that while searching for various beautiful cheongsams for the film, they couldn't find beautiful fabrics with the right patterns, so they made ㅇㅅ using pretty patterned paper to film. I tried to find which outfit was made of paper, but it's difficult.
