This is not an estimate of 'ancestral/family hometowns' that includes the hometowns of parents and grandparents. According to the 2020 Population and Housing Census, the population of the Seoul Metropolitan Area was 26.04 million, consisting of 9.586 million in Seoul, 2.945 million in Incheon, and 13.512 million in Gyeonggi.

Crucially, the number of people born within the Seoul Metropolitan Area is approximately 10.4 million.

In other words, out of the current 26 million residents in the Seoul Metropolitan Area, approximately 15.8 million (about 61%) are estimated to have been born in the metropolitan area. Conversely, those born outside the metropolitan area account for approximately 9.6 million (about 37%).
