Question about the Odyssey) Why didn't the soldiers apologize to Poseidon as requested?

Since they encountered a sea storm
and it looked like all the soldiers were going to die,
they told Odysseus to quickly beg Poseidon for forgiveness,
but he stubbornly refused to do so. Is there a reason for this?
