It really was too much of a free ride
Baseball is a given, and
even for soccer, when people say a country is good at it in Asia,
it's really just
Korea, Japan, and Australia.
But Australia can't participate in the Asian Games,
and Japan is sending their U-21 youth team + college students
with zero wildcards.
I believe there are quite a few other countries
besides Japan that are sending U-21 teams,
and it's also true that being selected for the Asian Games national team
has been perceived as a 99% guarantee for military exemption.
Just looking at the fact that soccer has won 4 consecutive gold medals
and baseball has won 5 consecutive gold medals,
the Asian Games military exemption really was too much of a free ride.
Anyway, since the abolition of the Asian Games military exemption has become likely,
we'll probably be sending our 3rd or 4th string teams
to the Asian Games for baseball and soccer.
Since Taiwan still has military exemptions tied to the Asian Games,
they will be sending their 1st string teams,
and from now on, Taiwan will likely keep sweeping
the gold medals in Asian Games baseball.
