How were funerals conducted when you were young??????

I live in Seoul, and from what I remember,
when my maternal grandfather passed away,
it took about 8 hours from Seoul to Haenam... so we went straight there.
When my family arrived at my grandfather's house, we lifted the cloth covering him
to confirm he had passed, and my mother wailed in grief..
I understand the procedures like carrying the coffin around the neighborhood and the burial,
but is it the standard way in rural areas to not go to a funeral hall immediately after death,
but instead keep the body in the house behind a folding screen
until the family arrives? How would they handle the smell?
How long would they keep the body in the house before moving to a funeral hall or a mortuary?
