Do women often call each other "Hyung," and men call each other "Unnie"?

When I went to the cathedral, I heard an elderly lady calling someone older "Hyung-nim" (older brother).
Also, while drinking recently, I heard some young men calling someone "Unnie" (older sister).
Is this more common than I thought?
