I've been rewatching Samspara lately and have a question

I'm not just watching it as a Samspara fan, but properly rewatching it.
Wasn't MJ somewhat curious about Peter from the very first time she saw him?
It was mutual, but did they not get together in the beginning because Peter's personality was too shy?
