Why are there so many people who project their identities onto athletes?

Women project their identities onto idols
Men project their identities onto athletes
At least women go to fan signing events to talk to them and establish some kind of connection, but seeing men project themselves onto people who have absolutely nothing to do with them and don't even know they exist...
Just how messed up must their lives be?
