Farmland investigation was not the Minister's proposal... Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs unable to speak up to the President
An official from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) stated, “It seems people are misunderstanding that the Minister proposed the plan, when in fact, the President mentioned the issue of farmland speculation during the Cabinet meeting in February, and Minister Song explained the plan for a full-scale farmland investigation during the Cabinet meeting in May.”
During the live-broadcasted Cabinet meeting on February 24, President Lee instructed Minister Song, saying, “Farmland management is a mess. It has become a target for speculation. If necessary, organize a large-scale workforce to conduct a full-scale investigation, and if people buy land claiming they will farm it only to leave it neglected, they should be ordered to sell it. Review that as well and report on how to investigate the actual situation and handle it.” Consequently, Minister Song reported the specific plan for a full-scale farmland investigation during the May Cabinet meeting.
Even if we concede that Minister Song did indeed propose the full-scale farmland investigation, it is questionable whether President Lee's actions on that day were appropriate. Singling out the minister in charge and shifting the blame in front of angry farmers gathered over the farmland investigation is a disappointing display.
