Detention Center Photos and Descriptions

This is what it looks like
The green bag is for personal clothing
All of one person's daily necessities fit into
one or at most two bags.. Besides that, there are also
clothing racks made of transparent plastic
(gym rats use them with water for workouts)
The most important place — the toilet (a.k.a. the latrine)
In a narrow space about 1.5x2.0m,
there is one toilet and one window covered with a
screen without a glass pane; most notably, there is a
transparent plastic window that makes everything visible
It is even more explicit than the silhouette of Lee Byung-hun
in the movie "Inside Men" when he says "with a flashlight" while pooping
So, people apply glue multiple times to make it somewhat opaque,
or make newspaper curtains that can only be lowered
when pooping or masturbating (you get in trouble if caught

Since there is no faucet inside, a hose is connected from the
sink faucet through the hole in the door to a water collection bucket
to keep it constantly filled

The Window

Locker — A wooden storage unit for belongings
It is used to store personal items of seniors
or as a storage warehouse for smuggled food. It is called the "storehouse,"
and the "storehouse keeper" holds more power than the Meal Leader
Bedding
A place where bedding like blankets, sleeping bags, and mattresses are organized
If it isn't organized neatly, most "Room Leaders"
will lose their minds
Laundry Drying Rack
A place where various personal laundry and
towels for senjoy are hung on hangers, divided by seniority
If water drips because the laundry wasn't wrung out well, you're screwed
The Door
The place where you become an "outcast" as mentioned in the Poten post
Various announcements are broadcast through the silver intercom
on the right, and there is an emergency bell (press in case of an accident)
It is a quite sturdy steel door; since the hallway is slightly visible
through the small window, some people like that spot
That spot is the "doorman's seat," a mid-tier position
When people enter or exit, you need the speed to block the door

The Pass-through Window

A window through which various documents and mail pass daily;
the place where ordered food is brought in, where three meals a day
arrive, where you occasionally chat with cellmates,
and where you can engage in a battle of nerves with others in the room
Usually, this is where the Room Leader stays
It's a good place to hide and sleep during the day,
and it's a spot where you can monitor everything
happening inside the room
Ulsan Detention Center has old wooden floors
and they are hollow underneath
So, walking makes a thumping sound
Therefore, there is a rule to buy thick sports socks
and walk while slightly lifting your heels
Also, if your only set of prison uniform gets wet while using the toilet,
it can cause a smell because the water soaks into the wooden floor,
so people enter wearing only underwear with the uniform off
In case someone needs to use the bathroom while another is pooping,
there is a rule to shout "Anyone in a hurry for the toilet?"
and make eye contact once in a while
Contrary to how spacious the photos look,
it is really cramped
If an adult male stands at the sink,
his skin would touch someone else passing by the toilet
And the "Mr. Cockroaches" commute constantly
The width is roughly 2.5 to 3 meters,
and the length is such that if about 10 adult males
lay down shoulder to shoulder, they could fit
Currently, 12 to 13 people sleep in such places due to "overcrowding"
Would the highest-ranking seniors sleep in such discomfort and cramped space?
Never
After allocating space for those people to stretch out and sleep comfortably,
the remaining spots are filled by seniority
I once slept with 8 people in a space of
1.8m (mattress length) x 5m width..
It's a miracle how we manage to sleep, but it's possible..
In Ulsan, there is one "mad dog" in his late 40s known as a troublemaker;
He has extreme intermittent explosive disorder and keeps hitting anyone,
making life impossible, so they sent him to the disciplinary cell,
but there, he broke a plastic meal tray and cut his own finger
And now, he lives comfortably in a spacious solitary cell
