Which feels more exotic, Bangkok or Kyoto?

I'm thinking of visiting Thailand
but I want to feel like I've stepped into a different world.
I love Kyoto so much. I don't like Osaka because it feels too much like Korea.
In that sense, is Bangkok better than Kyoto?
Is it more expensive than Japan, including airfare?
