Admiral Yi Sun-sin of the Deoksu Yi Clan and Queen Inseon of the Deoksu Jang Clan
The Deoksu Yi clan has a population of approximately 60,000.
Their ancestral seat, Deoksu, is Deoksu-ri in Kaesong.
Yulgok Yi I, of the same Deoksu Yi clan, was a distant relative;
Yulgok served as the Minister of War, while Sun-sin was a lower-ranking military officer.
Despite this, there was absolutely no solicitation of favors or special treatment between them.
This was during an era when connections through blood, region, and school—and even money—were even more intense than they are today.
The Deoksu Jang clan of Kaesong is even more special.
With a population of about 25,000, they are even rarer than the Deoksu Yi clan.
The founder was Jang Sun-ryang, a high-ranking Mongol civil official of Uyghur descent who accompanied the daughter of Kublai Khan, the Imperial Princess, when she married King Chungnyeol.
He served as Gwangrok Daebu and Munha Chanseongsa and was titled the Prince of Deoksu.
His descendant, Queen Inseon, was the Queen Consort of King Hyojong, the mother of King Hyeonjong,
and the paternal grandmother of King Sukjong, Joseon's greatest scandal-maker.
Among the surnames with Kaesong as their ancestral seat, these two Deoksu clans are particularly special.
