Is it legally justifiable to kill someone who is wielding a knife?

If someone isn't threatening me directly, but is in the middle of threatening someone else,
would I be punished if I killed them from behind by striking their head with a wooden club or using a chokehold? I'm wondering if self-defense wouldn't apply if I'm not the one being directly attacked.
