What is a letter of indemnity and why is it risky?

A letter of indemnity is a guarantee given to the carrier to release cargo without the original bill of lading, backed by a promise to cover any resulting claim. It is risky because it strips away the document of title protection and the indemnity is only as good as the party giving it.
