Do you empathize with seniors in their 80s refusing health checkups or medical tests?

Looking at my grandparents, who are in their 80s,
they don't want to undergo regular checkups.
When they go to the hospital because they are feeling unwell and the doctor says,
"It's not strictly necessary, but since there is a 'what if' possibility, would you like to get a test?"
they always say they absolutely won't do it.
They say what's the point of knowing if it only causes stress.
Now, they are scared, they don't want to know,
and if they are in pain, they just want to pass away without knowing what's wrong...
