Naturalized Surname Stories Part 7: The Jin Clan of Guangdong
Admiral Chen Lin of the Ming Dynasty, who was a true comrade-in-arms to Admiral Yi Sun-sin,
was originally from present-day Hong Kong in Guangdong Province.
Because of this, he was highly skilled in naval warfare and became a naval admiral.
He mourned the death of Yi Sun-sin more deeply than anyone else,
and there is even an anecdote where he rebuked King Seonjo to his face regarding this matter.
His son died in battle during the war against the Qing Dynasty.
After the fall of the Ming Dynasty, his grandson declared that he could not live under the same sky as the Qing, who had killed his father, and led his family
onto a boat to head toward Joseon.
The first place they arrived at wasogeumdo Island in Jeolla Province.
Geogeumdo was the headquarters where Yi Sun-sin rebuilt his navy during the Jeongyu Jaeran (Japanese invasions),
and it was also the place where Chen Lin first met Yi Sun-sin after bringing the Ming navy.
It was truly a coincidence.
After wandering through various locations, his descendants eventually settled in Haenam.
There is a clan village in Haenam, Jeolla Province, and they take the name of their hometown, Guangdong,
as their clan seat (Bon-gwan), making them the Guangdong Jin clan, with a population of approximately 2,500 people.
