If they want to raise kids at home, why send them to school?
The education community has been shocked by a case where the parents of a student who was injured while falling during a "beanbag toss" activity in an elementary school classroom filed a lawsuit against the teacher in charge, two years after the incident occurred. As outdoor physical activities are steadily decreasing due to frequent complaints from parents, concerns are rising that even "indoor classroom physical education," which was considered an alternative, may also be curtailed.
A, a former teacher, was recently under police investigation. On June 25, 2024, in a 4th-grade classroom at G Elementary School in Geumcheon-gu, Seoul, A was conducting a physical education activity where students tossed beanbags 20–30 cm above their heads to catch them. During the activity, a student fell. The student's right knee joint appeared to be protruding. A reported the incident to 119 through the school nurse immediately, and the student was moved to a hospital. A, who retired in 2020, was working as a part-time instructor at the time, and since there were no further discussions afterward, they believed the student's injury had been resolved smoothly. However, on June 25 of this year, two years later, the student's parents filed a complaint against A on charges of occupational negligence resulting in injury. The reason cited was that the student required more than six weeks of treatment for the injury at the time and continues to suffer from recurring pain and numbness, which limits their physical activities.
Kim, a teacher who teaches play-based physical education in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, told [Sidae], "Beanbags are not a dangerous tool at all, but (after hearing about A's case) I have also removed beanbag tossing from my physical activities." Kim continued, expressing concern, "I once received complaints throughout an entire semester from a parent asking, 'Why didn't you prevent sand from getting in while watching from the playground?' after sand got on a 1st-grade student's head during outdoor play. Because of this, we have no choice but to increase indoor activities, but now even indoor activities require extreme caution."
Teacher Yoon, who works at an elementary school in Busan, also expressed psychological pressure, saying, "I once saw a parent of a student who strained their neck muscles while performing rolls included in the curriculum come to the school and say harsh words to a fellow teacher. I feel anxious even about students running in the gymnasium, worrying about what might happen if they slip and get hurt."
Because of "mom-충s" (entitled mothers), all the children in the school are being prevented from doing physical education.
How do they plan to send them to the military?
