The Father of Korean Wuxia

In 1961, the wuxia novel 《Jeonghyeopji (正俠誌)》 began serialization in the Kyunghyang Shinmun, making it Korea's first wuxia novel.
It was an adaptation of the Taiwanese author Yu Chih-wen's 《Sword Sea Lone Swan (劍海孤鴻)》. The author was Mr. Kim Kwang-ju, who had dropped out of Nanyang University's medical school in China and followed Kim Gu to participate in the independence movement in Shanghai and other parts of China before returning to Korea.
In addition to 《Jeonghyeopji》, he serialized several other wuxia works, mostly through adaptations; his final work was 《Biho (飛虎)》, which was an adaptation of the Taiwanese author Shen Chi-yun's 《Heavenly Monument (天闕碑)》.
While bedridden, he would dictate stories to his son, who was a high school student at the time and born in 1948. That son is Kim Hoon, the author of 《Song of the Sword》 and 《Namhansanseong》.
Kim Hoon's daughter is Kim Nam-suk, the main editor for the Netflix original series 《Squid Game》, who became the first Korean to win an ACE Award for TV editing in the United States.

Although he earned a decent amount of money writing 《Jeonghyeopji》, his fellow writers mocked him, saying he wrote "third-rate cheap novels." Kim Hoon recalled that amidst such contempt, his father drank excessively, to the point where "Father went around drinking all the alcohol in town."
Even more, shortly after, the novel 《Mujin Gihaeng (Record of a Journey to Mujin)》 by Kim Seung-ok was published. Upon reading it, Mr. Kim Kwang-ju felt pure admiration mixed with self-loathing, crying out, "I am finished now," and drank even more heavily.
His wife (Kim Hoon's mother) deeply resented him for ignoring their livelihood and constantly drinking, yet she once took his side. Even now, while suffering from dementia, whenever her memory briefly returns, she blames Kim Hoon......
