UK: Severe pollution in the Thames due to human waste?

British citizens are indiscriminately discharging human waste and sewage into the Thames River.
Due to an inadequate sewage system relative to the population size... they are unable to treat it and are letting it flow directly into the river.
It seems the British government is failing to establish countermeasures. Since the UK's withdrawal from the EU... it feels like the situation has worsened.
If even developed nations are in a state where human waste is polluting rivers... the situation in other developing nations is obvious.
