Why do banks deal in documents rather than goods?
Because banks cannot inspect cargo in distant ports or judge commercial performance. Documents are a standardised, checkable proxy. This makes the system fast and impartial, but it also means a perfect shipment with imperfect paperwork can go unpaid.
