Why did electric vehicles suddenly become so popular?

Colleagues around me who are thinking about buying a new car
are all seriously considering EVs.
Some are looking at hybrids, too.
It wasn't quite like this last year or before.
But starting this year, it feels like EVs are really taking off.
Even the "anti-EV" crowd doesn't seem as prominent as before.
It's going to get difficult with EV charging in apartments... because the speed of installing more chargers won't be able to keep up.
