Does anyone actually make money from investment opportunities recommended by acquaintances?

I only ever see news about scams on TV, or stories about people investing in a CEO friend's company and failing to even recover their principal...
They lure you in with promises like, "If you invest in this real estate, you'll receive a steady annual return,"
offering much higher returns compared to the ordinary investment products offered by asset management companies.
